Topic of the talk: What does the world look like when you see it through "physics glasses"?
Abstract: While the world around us is full of rich diversity, physics tries to find the underlying patterns that tie some things with others. Would you ever think that you can have "sound lasers"? or that you can "see" the world with sound? Let's explore the parallels that exist around us and learn to find new patterns so long as we just learn to wear our physics glasses.
About the Speaker: Debbie Berebichez is a highly motivated, multi-talented young woman with a strong interest in the world of science and media communications. She successfully completed a Ph.D. in physics at Stanford University: the first Mexican woman ever to do so. Dr Debbie doesn’t take herself too seriously as it’s easy to get bogged down with all the scientific jargon that exists in the industry. |

She has chosen to play the role of well-educated scientist with a cheeky streak and her Twitter stream and blog The Science babe exemplify this. She aims to make science more accessible (and dare we say sexy) to everyday people and can hold her own easily, be it on a lab or shopping at Harrods.
In her scientific career, she is an expert in wave propagation in inhomogeneous media as well as in optimization. She is an inventor of a new technique to localize wireless signals in specific locations in buildings. A Summa Cum Laude B.A. graduate of Brandeis University, she received a full Wien Scholarship and was elected a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Her B.A. in both philosophy and physics infused her with a passion for expressing her scientific thoughts through media. She has experience in professional theater and has extensive on-camera practice. Being a risk analyst, she has used her skills to help Wall Street understand the fluctuating markets and she regularly blogs and presents to camera about the latest scientific breakthroughs. Her aim is to “become the new “Oprah” of science”, and seeing how she blends fun with smart science, we’d say she’s well on her way. She is an avid writer, part-time model, newspaper columnist, avid mathematician, computational scientist, risk analyst and teacher.
In recent years she’s given talks at TED and her subjects are always engaging- one of them being ‘The Science of High heels’, where she looks at how you can decipher which heels would be the most comfortable.
She educates and creates awareness about how physics is an important part of our everyday life. Let Debbie's experience reawaken in you the feeling of how fun science can be!
