Problem Statement

Deadline for abstract submission is 10th Jan, 2010

Total Prize money worth INR 25,000.

A 1:24 scaled three dimensional self-supporting model bridge is to be designed, analysed, constructed and tested till failure.

The physical constraints of the bridge are according to the following specifications:

  • Span(S) : 500 mm
  • Height (H) : 80 mm (greater than or equal to)
  • Width (W) : 120 mm (greater than or equal to)

A sample figure is shown here:

Design Constraints/ Specifications:

  1. The bridge should permit unobstructed movement of 1:24 scaled model of Volkswagen Beetle (Toy car) over its deck
  2. No part of the deck should be more than 50 mm above the abutments (support level)
  3. There should be adequate gap (G1 and G2) in between the deck members a V-bolt to pass through for loading purpose

  4. The bridge must be able to sustain a minimum weight of 8 Kgs.

Loading Specifications:.

  1. Only one person is allowed to do the loading (team-mates can assist him in other ways).
  2. Holding the load-carrier during loading is not allowed.
  3. The bridge will be loaded by hanging weights from a 5 mm thick mica board of size 180 mm x 80 mm, through a V-bolt attached to it with spacing(l) between legs being 120 mm.

Material Provided:

  • European- Beech sticks - 20 meters (20 sticks each of 1 meter length)
  • Epoxy Fevicol MR- 85 grams (to each team)
  • Jeweler's hack saw
  • Cellophane tape
  • Ruler
  • Pencil.

Fabrication Specifications:

  • The whole bridge must be fabricated by using provided materials only; use of any additional material is strictly not allowed.
  • The model will be made from European Beech timber sticks and joining them by epoxy. However you can use cellophane tape or threads for keeping sticks, etc., in place temporarily.
  • You can combine the sticks as per your design by gluing them together
  • The cellophane tape must not be part of the final structure ,they can be used for keeping the beads together temporarily.

Material Properties:

  1. European Beech sticks
    • Young's modulus of elasticity ~ 9 GPa
    • Tensile Strength 80 - 110 MPa
    • Width = 10 mm ; Thickness = 2 mm
    • Maximum length of provided stick = 1 m
    • Specific gravity ~ 0.7
  2. Epoxy Fevicol MR
    • Young's modulus of elasticity ~ 3-4 GPa
    • Setting time ~ 24 hrs
